Are you fit to drive?

8 August 2015 by 1ofa

On driving lessons in Paisley today, both myself and learner pupil noticed a car swerving at low speeds and thought, stay back from them, whilst driving at a safe distance, we noticed the driver seemed to be having difficulty steering the car straight course, then approaching lights too quickly, I remarked, “I bet they’re on a bloody mobile” when we got closer at the lights, they were not on a mobile at all, but the driver was an elderly gentleman and it got me thinking, is he fit to drive?

In Glasgow, there is a fatal accident enquiry taking place to establish what happened that led to the deaths of 6 pedestrians in Glasgow city centre on 22 December 2014, when a bin lorry went out of control.
It has been reported that the driver of the bin lorry, failed to declare to the DVSA and his employers, that he had suffered blackouts behind the wheel of a vehicle before, notably a bus.

fit to drive paisleyThis got me thinking, how many people are on our roads today driving unfit through a medical condition? No one will know a true figure, but I’d hazard a guess at, it’s a lot more that any of us would think.
How many times do you hear the expression, “they shouldn’t be on the road” from family and friends?
Take a look through the DVSAs list of health conditions and ask yourself, do I know anyone that has these conditions and have they reported them to their doctor with honesty?

It has been reported the driver, involved in the Glasgow tragedy, did indeed report his blackouts to a doctor, but failed to inform him, he had done so behind the wheel, with the doctor allegedly admitting, in hindsight, he could have asked more pertinent questions.

Awareness, observation, anticipation and clearance

5 August 2015 by 1ofa

Awareness, observation, anticipation and clearance, are just a few of the things needed when driving.

If the driver of the car, had taken just a couple of seconds out of his busy schedule, to check his mirrors, his blind spot and slightly opened the door first for a look back, then the cyclist, would not have been hit by a car door flying open. Did the cyclist see the car parking up? If so, he could have used all of the above subjects, taught to drivers by their instructors (for safe driving for life) to avoid it happening too. But we don’t know how long the car driver was sat there or if indeed practices what he has been taught.

Credit must be given to the taxi driver, using all of the above in his driving skills locker, he avoided a very serious accident occurring by using these, including executing a perfect controlled stop. Well done that driver.

Driving test pass for Melissa

24 May 2015 by 1ofa

Big congratulations to Melissa from Partick, Glasgow on passing her driving test at Anniesland driving test centre.

She overcame the test day nerves and gave a good confident drive to pass with flying colours, after taking driving lessons with Learn Me Driving School.

Always smiling and having a laugh on lessons I never thought she could smile and bigger, but she did on hearing the driving test examiner tell her those magic words.

Well done Melissa again on passing and safe driving for the future.

Mobile phone, seat belts and mirrors while driving.

3 January 2015 by 1ofa

The dangers of using a phone while driving, look at his reaction time before he realised the traffic had stopped in front of him.
Look at the difference in wearing a seatbelt between the two of them.
If he had checked his rear view mirror while stopping, he might have been able to move his car to a better position to avoid the car coming up and hitting him from behind also.

Now if he wasn’t using his phone, had his seatbelt on and checked his rear view mirror when he seen the static traffic, all of this would have been avoided, why?
He would had been more alert, seen the traffic had stopped in front of him in plenty of time and after checking his rear view mirror, he would have been able to warn the approaching traffic from behind by, pressing his brake peddle earlier, thus his brake lights warning the traffic behind he was slowing down or stopping and/or put on his hazard warning lights to warn the traffic behind.
