Show me / Tell me Questions
At the start of your driving test you’ll be asked 1 ‘Tell Me’ question about vehicle safety checks. If you get it wrong you get just get 1 minor fault, but it is possible to fail the test on the ‘Show Me’ section if you lose control of the car as you are performing it, as this is done whilst you are driving.
Do not turn the car on unless the examiner is sitting in the passenger seat. Turning the engine on while you are alone in the car counts as driving without a licence.
Many cars now have a diagnostic system which shows you any problems with the vehicle on the dashboard.
You are not allowed to just say that the car would just tell you of any problems because the system may be faulty where as a manual check is more reliable. The only exception to this is the question about testing your ABS as it’s safer to see if the light is on than put yourself into a skid to find out! Below are the questions you could be asked and examples of how they could be responded to on your test day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”3550″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][ultimate_heading main_heading=”Tell Me Questions” heading_tag=”h3″ sub_heading_margin=”margin-bottom:30px;”]Answered[/ultimate_heading][vc_tta_accordion][vc_tta_section title=”Q1: Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.” tab_id=”1456932014162-33124a44-4417″][vc_column_text]A1: Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q2: Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.” tab_id=”1456932014162-c5ef0e7e-dbca”][vc_column_text]
A2: Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q3: Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.” tab_id=”1457371389855-d8ae7763-7159″][vc_column_text]
A3: The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Note: Some restraints might not be adjustable.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q4: Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.” tab_id=”1457371388530-1a7f65c6-e3fe”][vc_column_text]
A4: No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q5: Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.” tab_id=”1457371387333-7c10ac8e-6cc1″][vc_column_text]
A5: Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).
[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q6: Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.” tab_id=”1457371386047-ab3bfb46-2261″][vc_column_text]A6: Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q7: Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.” tab_id=”1457371384854-6a2033b9-6719″][vc_column_text]
A7: Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).
[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q8: Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on this car.” tab_id=”1457371383590-22a7de5c-8915″][vc_column_text]
A8: Explain you’d operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q9: Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.” tab_id=”1457371380676-43c86540-f75c”][vc_column_text]
A9: If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made.
Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q10: Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use it/them. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.” tab_id=”1516136686350-87aab516-1c35″][vc_column_text]A10: Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. You would turn on fog lights when visibility is reduced to around 100 metres and less. To judge 100 metres, think of the length of a football pitch and use this as a guide to the distance when to use.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q11: Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.” tab_id=”1516137018628-fc0fbe0e-1dd2″][vc_column_text]A11: Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q12: Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil.” tab_id=”1516137126064-abca0a70-6226″][vc_column_text]A12: Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q13: Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.” tab_id=”1516137191396-4479f904-4ba9″][vc_column_text]A13: Identify high and low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q14: Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.” tab_id=”1516137249081-908bb33b-bfb8″][vc_column_text]A14: Identify reservoir, check level against high and low markings.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row]
